Why did you want to become a jockey?*
Hayes wanted to become a jockey because horses have become part of his strength story. Riding at HALTER has helped him build balance, core strength, and confidence in ways we didn’t know were possible. When he’s in the saddle, he feels tall, strong, and brave — like he’s already part of a winning team. Becoming a virtual jockey is his way of celebrating the horses who help him train like a champion each week and giving back to the program that helps his body grow stronger and his spirit shine brighter.
Tell us about yourself (ie what do you do, how did you find out about HALTER)*
Hayes is a bright, determined little boy on an undiagnosed medical journey. Over the past few years, he has faced complex neurological and metabolic challenges that primarily affect his cerebellum — the part of the brain responsible for balance and coordination of motor skills. While we continue searching for answers through programs like CHOP’s Undiagnosed Disease Program, Hayes shows us every day that strength isn’t defined by a diagnosis. One of the greatest gifts along this journey has been hippotherapy at HALTER. Riding isn’t just something Hayes does — it’s something that transforms him. The rhythmic movement of the horse mimics the natural pattern of walking, helping his brain and body communicate in ways traditional therapy sometimes cannot. Through riding, Hayes has strengthened his core, improved his balance, and built postural control that carries over into everyday life. We’ve watched his confidence grow with every session — sitting taller, stabilizing longer, and smiling wider. For a child whose body doesn’t always cooperate, the horse gives him freedom. It challenges him, strengthens him, and reminds him that he is capable. We are so grateful for HALTER and the way they harness the power of movement, connection, and courage. Hayes may be our virtual jockey for the Derby — but in our eyes, he’s already a champion
