Why did you want to become a jockey?*
I wanted to be a jockey for HALTER’s Derby fundraiser to help raise funds that support their incredible mission. HALTER provides life-changing equine-assisted services, research, and support for children, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to their important work in a fun and meaningful way!
Tell us about yourself (ie what do you do, how did you find out about HALTER)*
I am a faculty member at USC Upstate, where I teach community and public health, and I also serve on the HALTER board. Growing up in a small, rural town in the Midwest, I was always around horses. My passion for public health and my lifelong connection to horses made HALTER a perfect organization for me to support and be involved with.
Is there a fun fact you would like to share?*
I research lost person behavior, but ironically, I still manage to misplace my coffee cup at least once a day.
Who is your horse, and why did you choose him?*
My horse for the Derby is Finn! I chose him because I grew up with an Appaloosa named Sonny. Appaloosas are like the boxers of the horse world—full of personality and a little bit of mischief. With an Appaloosa, it’s never a dull moment, and I wouldn’t have it any other way!
